"Detox - Retox - Repeat" ugh

I found this 7-day juice cleanse.

I'm detoxing tomorrow.

If I feel like I'm dieing, it's ok it's suppose to feel like this.

I'm only drinking broth for 5 days.

Lemon drink ONLY.

If I pass out, let me be.

I'm that girl. Almost every Sunday, I'm deciding what random detox/cleanse to go through that week aka torture myself.

BUT THE TRUTH IS....

Most of us hear the words ‘fast’ or ‘cleanse’ and think, ‘just kill me instead.’ But I'm here to get a little graphic, a little scientific and talk a little about shit (actual shit).

And maybe this isn't new information....BUT MAYBE IT IS!

Did you know feces can be stuck in your colon for up to 7 years?!?! I know it's disgusting, you can go throw up now. You probably know that all the foreign chemicals and artificial sugars (which is basically in everything now) just gets stored as fat because your liver doesn't know what the f$#% to do with it.

So, yes detoxing or cleansing is scary but IT. IS. NECESSARY.

I could go real far and bore you with the liver detoxification process of our biological pathways, the purpose of specific enzymes and conjugation…but this is the quick and fluffy explanation of why we need a good ole cleanse:

We (especially in the Western hemisphere, ahem our diet SUCKS) are, for the most part, always eating…most of us eat 3 meals a day give or take. Our digestive system works tirelessly to process all that food, and since so much of our food, air and water is ridden with pollutants, this is no easy task. Our body, specifically liver, tries to process one of these foreign particles and for illustration sake, says, “WTF do I do with this?” Since we keep eating, it can’t take a break and figure out how to process it. It sort of says, “Eh, ok I’ll put it on the back burner and get to it later.” And by back burner I mean, it stores it (usually as a fat cell) and unfortunately usually never gets to go back and work it out. Now, multiply that process, and those fat/sick cells turn into obesity, chronic illness, heart disease, cancer, etc. It becomes a build up and unless you give your body the help/break it needs...well you can finish that statement. So what to do? Cleanse! Support your lymphatic system (the system that is responsible for actually flushing the toxins)! Support your immunity!

Give that old sweaty man (your liver), working tirelessly in the factory a break by allowing your digestive system to rest. Then, it can go back into it’s bookshelves and pull out the little particles that are trying to harm us. Once it’s able to do this, the toxins are sent packing, up to the bloodstream and out via lymph. For those of you who have done a fast before, at one point you probably felt like as if you might keel over? This isn’t usually from lack of food (please fast responsibly, know your body) this is called a healing crisis (incorporate fermented drinks that are rich in electrolytes and enzymes if this happens to you). A healing crisis involves every organ in the body working together to eliminate waste products, and it sets the regeneration process for weakened tissue. This elimination may make you feel like an acute condition has returned.

Now, even if you choose the best organic options, our water and air still have dangerous particles. Yeah, we can't win sometimes. Just kidding, OPTIMISM! Seriously though, traces of heavy metals are more than often found in our drinking water. Top four include Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead and Mercury. Smog levels vary for every city, but check your morning report. If you know you're exposing your body to a harsher environment than usual, load up on antioxidants that day...support your immunity any way you can.

Did you know roughly 90% of Serotonin is produced in your digestive tract? Quite literally, if you want to be happy…start cleaning up shop in your gut!

A detox or cleanse isn’t going to be easy, but the benefits out weigh the costs ten fold! Set your mind to it and envision the finish line. Your sacred self isn’t meant to be a garbage dump, start treating it with love and take notice of your mind following the same path of clarity.

I’ve listed my own daily detox ritual and a few overall lifestyle changes that can be made.

Personal daily ritual:

  1. Warm water and lemon with turmeric. - Flushes digestive system first thing in the morning and the

added turmeric has magical properties, of the many it has a major anti-inflammatory quality.

  1. Skin brushing (you might want to do this before you take a shower, prepare to be a little grossed out of all the dead skin that comes flaking off) - Begin around your ankles and move towards your heart, moving in this direction aids in circulation as well as replenishing your heart chakra. Use a sturdy coarse brush (like the one shown). The benefits of dry brushing are overwhelming:

  • Eliminates toxic material that accumulate on skin - encouraging skin cell renewal

  • Stimulates & drains lymphatic system, which is responsible for flushing out toxins aka eliminating FAT CELLS!

  • Increases circulation

  • Reduces appearance of cellulite

  • Supports digestion

You'll notice almost an immediate difference in not only the feel of your skin, but your mood...it's regenerative on so many levels. Make this practice multi-purpose by consciously brushing and any afflictive emotion like frustration, stress, etc. that arose that day, release it from you. Follow up by applying a paraben-free, non-toxic body lotion or just coconut oil will work to re-hydrate and nourish your skin.

  1. Apply a detox spray that contains a natural, un-processed salt (Himalayan, Dead Sea, etc.) – This will accelerate and help your body rid itself of toxins through the skin, similar to the process of reverse osmosis. These salts also contain a multitude of nutrients & minerals. We actually sell a wonderful detox spray that contains Ylang Ylang essential oil and Aloe vera, that helps clear the mind and soothes the skin. You can purchase here https://www.thewildlily.com/product-page/the-pink-salt

Overall lifestyle changes

  1. Meditation – Reduces stress, which suppresses immune function.

  2. Exercise 3/4 times a week – Releases endorphins, reduces stress, assists body in detox through sweat, increases cardiovascular health and leads to weight loss.

  3. Use stainless steal, glass or cast iron cookware. Cookware with aluminum, plastic and tephlon, which release toxic chemicals when heated.

  4. Nutritional Supplements:

  • Vitamin C (2 g) – Affects most body functions, can reverse acute and chronic disease and involved in fat metabolism.

  • Vitamin E (200 to 1200 IU daily) – Important antioxidant that protects systems from cell membrane lipid peroxidation. The toxins created from detoxification can cause serious illness, so it’s important they are controlled. It also stabilizes blood glucose and prevents muscle tissue breakdown.

  • Glutathione – Intercepts toxic compounds from Phase 1 detoxification, and it combines with Phase 2 toxic chemicals to form a water soluble conjugate that can be excreted in the bile and urine.

  • Turmeric – Protects liver and promotes bile flow. Also acts as an anti-inflammatory.

  • Lecithin – Thins bile and promotes the flow of toxins out of the liver.

  • Green barley powder – Counteracts the negative effect of intestinal poisons.

  • Rice protein – Plays important role in tissue detoxification.
